PLACING CREATIVITY AT THE HEART OF DEVELOPMENT
The UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) was established in 2004 to foster international cooperation among cities that have identified creativity as a strategic factor for sustainable urban development. Today, a global community of 408 cities works towards a common objective: integrating cultural industries into local development plans and cooperating actively on the international stage.
THE SEVEN CREATIVE FIELDS
The network reflects the diverse nature of global creativity, organized into seven distinct professional fields. Member cities are designated in one of these areas, representing a shared commitment to excellence in their specific craft:
Crafts and Folk Art / Design / Film / Gastronomy / Literature / Media Arts / Music
CORE OBJECTIVES & AREAS OF ACTION
The UCCN operates as a professional platform to leverage cultural assets through concrete, collaborative initiatives. It is at the local level that culture and creativity are lived and practiced daily, and the network provides the framework to turn this energy into sustainable growth:
- International Cooperation: Strengthening ties between cities to conceive new solutions to common urban challenges through peer learning.
- Professional Hubs: Developing centres of innovation and broadening opportunities for creators and professionals in the cultural sector.
- Knowledge Sharing: Engaging in professional and artistic exchange programmes and research across borders.
- Policy Integration: Fully integrating creativity into local development strategies through partnerships involving the public and private sectors.
- Cultural Participation: Improving access to and participation in cultural life, ensuring that creativity is a shared resource for all citizens.
