A GLOBAL ALLIANCE OF WORDS: UNESCO CITIES OF LITERATURE

The UNESCO City of Literature designation is a prestigious mark of excellence, identifying cities that place the power of language and storytelling at the heart of their urban identity. As part of the wider UNESCO Creative Cities Network, launched in 2004 to promote cultural diversity and sustainable development, our global community has grown into a vital bridge between cultures, celebrating the richness of both oral and written expression.

Being a City of Literature is a commitment to the enduring power of words. Our network is dedicated to nurturing all forms of literary art—from ancient poetic traditions to contemporary prose—while supporting the creators who shape our cultural landscape. Through international collaboration and the sharing of creative experiences, we work together to ensure that literature, in all its diverse voices, remains a vibrant and accessible part of daily life for everyone, both locally and internationally.

OUR GLOBAL FAMILY

We are a thriving community of 53 cities representing 39 countries and 6 continents. Beyond borders and languages, our network serves as a living library of human experience, home to over 26 million citizens united by a singular devotion to the art of the word.

As a global family, we focus on creating tangible opportunities for writers and readers alike through joint projects, residencies, and international festivals. Together, we are committed to building a future where cultural creativity is a primary driver for sustainable growth, ensuring that the legacy of literature continues to connect and empower cities in an ever-evolving global partnership.
